About Michael Emmett

Michael Emmett is a tattoo and fine artist based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, specializing in custom tattoos that combine bold, simple design elements of American traditional tattooing with contemporary influences such as psychedelic, spiritual, and abstract imagery. Michael’s tattoo journey began in 2001 after studying at Henry Ford Community College, School of Visual Arts in New York City, and Wayne State University. During this time, he had the opportunity to pursue tattooing, a craft he has been dedicated to for over two decades.

Tattooing has been at the heart of Michael’s artistic journey since beginning the practice, and his style draws heavily from the American traditional approach, focusing on clear, bold lines and simple designs that stand the test of time. At the same time, Michael incorporates psychedelic, spiritual, and abstract elements into his tattoos, creating pieces that are both timeless and unique.

Michael’s artistic influences span a wide range, from the bold, dynamic works of Mexican muralists to the psychedelic art of contemporary artists. He is also deeply inspired by folk art traditions, including the Madhubani and Tanjore painting styles of India, as well as the Thangka paintings of Tibet. His work is further shaped by indigenous art, textile patterns from around the world, and the influence of surrealism, expressionism, and minimalism.

Michael’s spiritual and psychedelic experiences continue to guide him in his artistic journey, offering inspiration and depth to his work.

Spiritual Path

Michael has been on his spiritual path for about 8 years, a journey that started after going through dark, questioning times and asking himself about the purpose of existence. This led him to a friend who suggested he try meditation and yoga, sparking a profound shift. Michael was initially drawn to Zen meditation, which quickly resonated with him, and he felt a strong connection to the teachings.

Soon after, Michael was introduced to the teachings of Ram Dass and his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, which had a profound impact on him. He felt a deep connection to Ram Dass’ teachings, particularly his perspective on the use of psychedelics as tools for self-awareness and spiritual growth. This led Michael to explore plant medicines of the Amazon, which provided him with a powerful, transformative experience. Through this journey, he came into contact with a deeper sense of spirituality and divine love, furthering his understanding of the transformative potential of spiritual practice and devotion.

This journey led Michael to begin studying branches of Eastern philosophy, the Vedic sciences, and the traditions of India. He’s had the privilege of meeting and learning from a range of respected teachers and mentors, including Robert Svoboda, Krishna Dass, Shantala Sriramaiah, Nina Rao, Bob Thurman, Jai Dev Singh, and Alex and Allyson Grey, who are leaders in the psychedelic art movement and have been important influences on his artistic journey.

Following a suggestion from Nina Rao after attending a chanting workshop, Michael began studying Veda chanting with Shantala Sriramaiah, an experience that has been deeply transformative. The study of Veda chanting has significantly enriched Michael’s spiritual practice, offering new depths of understanding and connection.

Michael continues to practice meditation, yoga, and spiritual study, believing that making art is a spiritual practice in itself.

Photography Journey

Michael’s interest in photography has been rekindled over time, and a recent trip to Ireland played a key role in reigniting his passion for the craft. While he had explored black-and-white film photography during his college years, it was during this trip that he found himself deeply connected to photography in a new way. Armed with a new camera, he began capturing street scenes, musicians, and the stunning landscapes that filled him with inspiration and a deep connection to nature.

Although Michael is still in the early stages of his photographic journey, he’s excited to share his growth and exploration with others. He has decided to showcase some of his photos on this website, offering a glimpse into his ongoing journey as he learns and refines his craft.
